Go For the Tortillas & Eat a Taco

September 29, 2021

It had been a while since I’d been to Tortilleria La Autentica (aka The Tortilla Factory) in Loveland. Despite having the best homemade tortillas I’ve ever bought and eaten, I’d forced myself to quit buying them years ago when I was on a health kick. I know, I know. Stupid. After I got over that health kick, I’d gotten out of the habit of buying my tortillas there.

Years later, yesterday to be exact, I decided to hit the place on Taco Tuesday. The tiny, downtown store has been at 4th Street and N. Washington for as long as I can remember (and I moved from Denver to Loveland in 2002).

This time, I was going in for tacos and came out with tortillas and tacos. Their wall of soft homemade tortillas proved to be just as irresistible as ever. Flour tortillas are $3 per bag.

There used to be a lot of Mexican products here, stuffed inside the “grocery store” side of the building, but yesterday it seemed to be more of a pequeño restaurant with a full menu of burritos and other things wrapped in soft tortillas.

I had come specifically for tacos, which were the special of the day

. A taco platter is just $6 on Taco Tuesday. However, I just wanted two tacos, and seeing that they were only $1.41 per taco that’s what I got.

There isn’t much choice here when it comes to taco filling. You can order a taco with ground beef or shredded beef. That is all. I went with shredded and took my nicely plastic-wrapped plate outside. Tortilleria La Autentica only has outside eating and it’s a much nicer area than it used to be.

The shredded beef taco comes in a shell that seems to have been fried at some point earlier. It holds its shape like a hard shell tortilla but has that softness of a soft, fried tortilla. I’m a fan. This taco isn’t fancy but it’s also pretty good for $1.41. The tacos came with salsa. Not hot enough, in my opinion, but then again, I like my salsa very, very hot.

There’s a lot more on the menu to try here, and I’ll probably be back because damn, those homemade tortillas are so good.

Do you have a go-to taco joint? I’d love to hear about it!

Until next time, eat a taco.
