Enough is Enough: Done with Colorado Food Trucks

On Friday, I bought this at a food truck parked at a local brewery.

It was $12 (plus tip).

There were exactly 10 (ten) one-inch pretzel bites, plus a nice beer cheese.

Let’s do the math, shall we? That’s a $1.20 per pretzel bite (before tip). And yes, I know the dip cost the food truck something as well, so maybe it was more like $1 a pretzel bite.

Still… $1 per one-inch pretzel bite?

In what world is that okay? This is a German food truck and the closest thing we could get to a pretzel were these bites. I figured there would be more. I don’t even think this amount of dough adds up to one big pretzel.

Enough is enough. We are being screwed by food trucks, people. Not only are we asked to tip before we get our food, most tip settings start at 20%. Twenty percent for food I haven’t even tasted yet. And I do it, because I can’t help myself.

Let me be clear, I am not counting taco trucks as “food trucks.” Taco trucks have been around for ages, long before “fancy” food trucks arrived on the scene. And guess what? I can still get a cheap taco at a taco truck. In fact, I know of several taco trucks where I could get three tacos for $9. That’s $3 less than those ten pretzel bites.

Look, I know small business is hard. Both my husband and I have been small business owners since 2004. Overhead is pricey, especially in Colorado. However, some of these food truck prices have gotten to the point of ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS, and I’m over it.

I know since the pandemic we’ve been conditioned to expect high prices, high tips and we’re suppose to keep our mouth shut about it lest someone comment, “Well, if you can’t afford to eat at a food truck, don’t do it, moron!”

Don’t you love social media?

So guess what? I’m saying it… er… writing it. I can’t afford these ridiculous overpriced food trucks anymore. I’m over it. If these prices don’t bother you then by all means, keep on keeping on, but for me enough is enough.

  1. Agreed. Paying sit-down restaurant prices w/o a server so you can stand on a street and eat. I payed $23 (including tip) for a 10” pizza the other day at a food truck. A local pizza joint I frequent charges the same for an 18” pizza that’s every bit as good, plus you’re seated. We are conditioned to excessive payouts.
